The Heartwarming Journey of Three Heirlooms for Hospice Volunteers
For two decades, Judy White, Judy Landon, and Phyllis Wiesner have been quite the team at Heirlooms for Hospice, an upscale resale shop in Montrose. These three compassionate women have turned their time as volunteers into a 20-year adventure of friendship, laughter, and community service.
It all began with a shared desire to make a difference. “It was something nice that made us feel good because we believe in HopeWest,” reflects Judy Landon, thinking back on why they started volunteering at Heirlooms for Hospice. All proceeds from Heirlooms support the programs of HopeWest, a nonprofit that provides palliative care, hospice, and grief support services throughout western Colorado, along with PACE services in the Grand Valley.
What started as a commitment to a worthy cause blossomed throughout the years, as these three women have created an atmosphere where every visitor feels like a friend. Their laughter and cheerful banter fill the store, making it a comforting environment not only for those seeking unique shopping but also for those who donate gently used items. When donors bring in belongings of loved ones who’ve passed, these women provide a listening ear, exemplifying the heartfelt support that defines the Heirlooms experience.
During their weekly shift, they also enjoy mixing a bit of business with pleasure. “We also like to shop the store ourselves each week,” Judy White says with a laugh. They’re always on the lookout for a favorite find while volunteering on the sales floor, and then enjoy catching up over home-baked treats in the breakroom.
When asked about the future, their response is filled with humor and determination. “They’ll have to carry us out when we can no longer walk. We’re permanent fixtures!” declares Judy White. Volunteering at Heirlooms for Hospice isn’t just about giving your time; it’s about becoming part of a community that cares, laughs, and supports each other. So join the HopeWest volunteer team, and see for yourself how rewarding volunteering can be. Who knows? You might just find yourself becoming a permanent fixture, too!
