Local medical professionals have an exciting opportunity to receive expert training from a world-renown palliative medicine pioneer in a location close to home.
Charles F. von Guten, M.D., PhD, FACP, FAAHPM, will be giving a presentation on Palliative Medicine, A Core Competency in the Practice of Medicine on Wednesday, June 3, from 8:00am – 4:00pm at the HopeWest Hospice Care Center on 3090 N. 12th Street in Grand Junction.
Despite advances in pain and other symptom management the incidence and severity of these symptoms have worsened in the 10 years rather than improved (JAMA 2014:312(18)L1868-1869). To reduce patient suffering, all medical providers must advance their practice to include palliative care.
The presentation will cover basic and advanced symptom management through interactive case conferences; complex symptom management including pain, dyspnea, delirium and nausea/vomiting; when to think about a palliative care consultation, home-based palliative care or hospice; and how to have the conversation about palliative care.
The Palliative Medicine presentation is part one of a two part series. Part two of the presentation will available in the fall of 2015. The presentation is a Continuing Medical Education activity offering CME credits for those who attend.
Additional presentations will take place on June 4 in Placerville at the Fire Station on 410 Front Street and on June 5 in Montrose at the Montrose Memorial Hospital on 800 S. Third Street.
